It's happened! The Detroit Lions have started the 21 day practice clock on James Houston and he returned to the practice field with the Lions on Thursday. This is very good news for a team that's about to play in the playoffs in a couple weeks.
The news was somewhat spoiled earlier in the week when Lions head coach Dan Campbell said on 97.1 The Ticket that the Lions were considering starting the clock on Houston this week. Then he sort of backtracked on that later that same day when he said the Lions weren't sure if they were going to do it this week or wait till next.
They sort of met in the middle with Houston returning to practice on Thursday. This obviously means that Houston will not play against the Cowboys on Saturday. It could also mean that his status against the Vikings could be in question. We may not see Houston until the playoffs when you take the way the Lions have been with players returning from injury into consideration. You also have to factor in the fact that Houston hasn't played since Week 2.
Just as a refresher, here's how the 21 day clock works. The Lions have 21 days to activate Houston and add him to their 53 man roster. If they decide not to, Houston will go to injured reserve and his season will be over.
We'll see soon enough when the Lions decide he's ready to go. The Lions getting healthy at the right time is huge though.
