Detroit Lions Mailbag: Gardner-Johnson or Melifonwu?

Good morning to the fans of the NFC North Champion Detroit Lions. Has this been a fun season or what? It's not over yet though. Some big things are still coming. So we have some more questions to answer along the way. We got some good stuff this week, let's jump into it.
Both. I love Kerby Joseph, but you have to keep Melifonwu in the lineup right now. Especially since he's shown that he can be a pass rusher too. The Lions will probably look for ways that everyone can be out there though. Gardner-Johnson is pretty flexible, so he may be lined up in a myriad of different ways. Such a good problem for the Lions to have this late in the year.
No insight directly from the staff, but this seems like a reaction to the Lions offense coming out flat after the half and having bad third quarters. The Lions have actually been decent in the third quarter since they started doing this and they've won both games.
Digging a little deeper here, The Lions have started the game out on defense nine times this year and they're 5-4 in those games. They're 6-0 when they start the game with their offense. Could be a coincidence. Who knows?
The Lions front office has given very few reasons to not be confident in them. I think each guy will get a good contract that's both good for them and good for the team. The Lions don't seem to have any players that want to hold the team hostage at contract time and the Lions don't seem like a team that wants fight with their players come contract time.
I think the Lions standing in the league will play a part when it comes time to re-up with these guys. If they're one of the very top teams in the league, things should go very smoothly. If they somehow fall from grace, I still think things will go smoothly, but it could cost more.
Because he’s not sexy and they require sexiness. The only problem is that they never think about how hard it is to find sexy that’s actually sexy. They also don’t consider how unsexy things would be when you find out that the new QB isn’t sexy like you thought he’d be.
There's a lot of variables at play and it's tough to answer this question. We have to find out how far the cap rises, whether or not the Lions have some cap casualties and who's going to be available during free agency time. What I can tell you is that the Lions are projected to have the ninth highest cap space in the NFL per Over the Cap. They believe the Lions will have just under $50 million to spend. That could change once we get the answers to the above questions. It could be more.
In terms of who you absolutely have to get deals for, Jared Goff, Jonah Jackson, C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Jalen Reeves-Maybin come to mind.
I think it has to be a pass rusher or a cornerback. I wouldn't rule out receiver if there's something that you can't miss there. Why not make the one of the most dangerous offenses in the NFL more dangerous? They still need that X receiver.
But it would likely be the pass rusher or cornerback. Here's some guys at both positions that I have my eyes on in the first round. Of course I'm looking at guys that have a chance to be where the Lions pick.
Pass Rusher
- Penn State's Chop Robinson
- Alabama's Dallas Turner
- Miami's Leonard Taylor
- Ohio State's JT Tuimoloau
Cornerback
- Iowa's Cooper DeJean
- Missouri's Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
- Alabama's Terrion Arnold
- Georgia's Kamari Lassiter
I highly doubt it. I'm not saying that they would never try it here or there, but Hooker isn't really the type of quarterback you do this with. Typically you're looking for more of a guy that has a ton of speed and running ability. That's not really Hooker. He can run and he can be mobile, but he's not a wild cat kind of guy that can take over a play with his running ability like a Justin Fields or Lamar Jackson.
With that said, Campbell comes from a team that does it more than anyone with Taysom Hill. Still, I don't think the Lions opt to make this a regular part of their offense. Hooker will be the backup.
I hated it. It felt like some typical veteran player behavior. Like a guy that's been in the league for years and feels he can solve every problem. Just irrational confidence from a guy that has been not great at shooting the ball this season. He gave that play no time to develop and just chucked up a contested three immediately. I'm so mad about this team right now.
This Lions and Pistons stat will hurt your soul
I'm a die hard Detroit Pistons fan just like I'm sure most Detroit Lions fans are. Things aren't going so well for the Pistons right now. They've lost an NBA in season record of 27 straight games. That's just insane. You want see something else that's insane? The Lions, a team that that only plays […]
