Lions adding hybrid defensive back to their secondary, where he fits in
The Lions love positional versatility and this move screams that
The Detroit Lions could use some secondary help for sure at both slot cornerback and safety, and they’re adding that help by signing a hybrid of both those things.
Lions singing DB Christian Izien to a one-year deal
Izien has spent the last three seasons with the Buccaneers, and our Bucs beat writer, Evan Winter, explains exactly how many different things he can do.
“Izien has done it all in the Bucs secondary during his three years in Tampa Bay: He’s played safety, outside corner, and nickel. He’s a versatile, gritty player who has worked his butt off to make the team each year since going undrafted in 2023. He’s not the biggest guy nor is he the most athletic, but he uses his smarts and instincts to get the jump on opposing offenses, and it’s worked out so far. He’s a high-end backup with low-end starter potential in the right defense.”
I mean, that says it all right there. The Lions love guys who can bring positional versatility to the table, and that’s why they drafted Brian Branch and signed Avonte Maddox. The more you can do, the better.
The Lions need depth, and that’s what this signing is. As Winter notes, Izien is not really a starter, but is high-end depth. If we learned anything about the Lions’ defense last year, it’s that high-end depth was needed in the safety department.
You’ll also note that Winter said: “gritty.” That’s a Dan Campbell trait all the way. One really notable thing is that very early into training camp last year, Bowles publicly declared that Izien had a roster spot already. As Winter told me via text, that is something Bowles never does for anyone. So you get the idea of the kind of player the Lions are getting here. A hard-working guy who can play multiple positions.
