Not too long ago, there was some concern that the Lions might lose defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard to his alma mater, LSU, after they fired Brian Kelly. That’s not happening, but the Lions are losing a coach to the college ranks after all, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Lions tight ends coach Tyler Roehl to take Iowa State offensive coordinator job at Iowa State

This is kind of a setback for the Lions in the sense that Roehl was a coach Lions head coach Dan Campbell said he had his eyes on for a long time. There was some thought that maybe the Lions might consider him for their own offensive coordinator role if the team moved on from John Morton. But that won’t happen.

Roehl was already at Iowa State in 2024 before leaving to take the tight ends job in Detroit after Steve Heiden took a job with the Jets. Now, he’ll go back there with a nice promotion, and the Lions will be on the lookout for a new tight ends coach. This, however, could be a big moment for assistant tight ends coach Seth Ryan, the son of former Jets head coach Rex Ryan, to take the tight ends coach job. He’s been with the Lions for five seasons.

Per Rich Silva of the Detroit News, Roehl is not leaving right away. He will finish out the season with the Lions.
