Lions make 5 roster moves ahead of matchup with the Eagles, rookie could be changing positions
Could he be he next Devin Funchess?
The Detroit Lions are preparing to fly to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles on Sunday Night Football, but first, they’ve made a few roster moves to address some of the injuries they’re dealing with. Here’s what the Lions did:
Place TE Sam LaPorta on injured reserve
We’re not sure when LaPorta’s back injury happened, but it will keep him out for at least the next four games. You hate to see it since he was having a Pro Bowl-caliber season. The silver lining is that Lions head coach Dan Campbell didn’t mention this being a long-term or season-ending issue, so the expectation is that he’ll be back in December, when the Lions will really need him.
Elevated WR Jackson Meeks from the practice squad
This is an interesting one because Meeks played a game for the Lions earlier this season, and during that game, he played tight end more than anything else. Campbell recently talked about how he liked playing him there, and it makes you wonder if he might wind up taking the Devin Funchess route and just be a tight end.
With LaPorta out, you have to wonder if the Lions decide to draw something up for Meeks, where he can catch some passes. He could be a mismatch out there.
Elevated WR Tom Kennedy from the practice squad
The Lions are legally obligated to have Kennedy on their practice squad, and they’re legally obligated to elevate him at least once a year. We’ll see if he gets any targets in this one.
Signed OL Michael Niese to the 53-man roster
The Lions are looking to get some interior depth with Niese joining the main roster. He has mostly been a guard for the Lions, but they’ve also had him take some snaps at center in the last two training camps. At this point, the Lions don’t really have a need, but are playing it safe here.
