The Lions just got some sudden, unexpected good news on the injury front that completely changes the outlook of the rest of their season
The Lions are enjoying a sudden change for their defensive outlook in 2025 this afternoon.
The Detroit Lions are as good as any team in the league when it comes to rolling with the punches. They did so last year amid waves of injury en route to a 15-win season. They’ve done so thus far in 2025 as well after a stinging loss to the Green Bay Packers to open the season and yet another collective wave of injuries.
And, as the Lions have found out plenty of times before, if you keep on chopping wood, eventually you’ll catch at break. It seems the Lions have caught another one of those breaks — this time in the secondary. One day after seemingly taking on a major long-term loss of cornerback Terrion Arnold, things have changed dramatically.
Lions get unexpectedly good news on ailing cornerback Terrion Arnold’s shoulder injury
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that a second opinion on former first-round pick Terrion Arnold‘s ailing shoulder has given hope for a much earlier return than expected. Arnold is now, per Schefter, expected to be back “sooner than expected, quite possibly this month.”
The Lions, sitting at 4-1, have two heavyweight matchups left against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before a Week 8 bye week, which should provide the team a reprieve and a chance to heal some wounds through the first half of the season. Their Week 9 contest will be played on November 2nd, so depending on how literally you take Schefter’s report, he could be teasing a possible return ahead of the bye.
Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold’s background
- Drafted 24th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft
- First-team All-American at University of Alabama in 2023
- 14 career passes defensed in 21 career games with Detroit
- Has played 71% of defensive snaps through first five weeks
Just yesterday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell set the stage for a dramatically different outcome. “Unfortunately, he’s going to be out for a while,” Campbell said. “He’s going to be out for a long time.”
It marks one hell of a turn for a defense that may rank in the middle of the pack in scoring defense but is top-5 in takeaways (9) and 8th in yards allowed through five weeks. With veteran cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. already present on injured reserve, the Lions secondary will surely enjoy the jolt of energy that’s set to come from a bounce of the ball in their favor.
And that, of course, is Dan Campbell’s team’s ultimate secret. Just keep chopping wood. It’ll break your way before you know it. Today, it did.
