Looks like Mike Kafka isn’t going anywhere

Earlier this week, we talked about NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler’s report on the Seattle Seahawks potentially having an interest in hiring Detroit Lions coach Mike Kafka to be their new offensive coordinator after Klint Kubiak took the Las Vegas Raiders head coach job after the Super Bowl.

“Some people I’ve talked to here in San Francisco think Seattle coach Mike Macdonald will want to keep a similar, Kubiak-style system in place,” Fowler wrote. “One back-pocket item to store away: Seattle was very impressed with Mike Kafka during head coach interviews two years ago. He’s now a senior assistant in Detroit and could be a name to watch.”

The Seahawks plan to promote from within with their next offensive coordinator

Tacoma News Tribune Seahawks beat writer Gregg Bell reported that the Seahawks are zeroing in on an internal hire for their next offensive coordinator job. We’ll see who it is, but at this point, the likely candidate is their passing game coordinator, Jake Peetz, who actually interviewed for the Lions’ offensive coordinator.

This is great news for the prospect of Kafka staying in Detroit. He’s not fully out of the water just yet, though. The Raiders are still going to need to hire their OC, but the expectation is that he could take someone off the Seahawks staff with him. Quarterback coach Andrew Janocko is the name being floated the most.

I would think it’s more than acceptable to breathe easy on this one. By the way, we still don’t know what his job title is, just yet. The expectation is that the passing game coordinator might be the role, but we’ll see. Last year, the Lions released their full coaching staff on February 10th. Perhaps we get to see what the full staff looks like soon, and with that, we’ll see if the Lions hired anyone else for their staff.
