It’s been a rough start to the season for Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold. Through three games, he’s been targeted more than any cornerback on the Lions. Opposing quarterbacks have targeted him 20 times, and he’s allowed 13 catches for 233 yards and a touchdown. On top of that, he’s had two pretty rough defensive pass interference calls on him that have led to touchdowns. With all that in mind, the Lions are looking to make some changes at cornerback.

The Lions plan to play Amik Robertson on the outside more, but will still have confidence in Terrion Arnold

“Yeah, look, there’s some things that I know that he (Arnold) wants back from that game the other night, that he knows he can do better. We know he can do better.” Lions head coach Dan Campbell old 97.1 The Ticket on Wednesday morning. “And it’s just, man, it’s honing your craft in a couple areas. I mean, there’s a reason why what we ask of these corners is not easy, but it’s also why you’re here. It’s why we acquire you, whether it’s a draft or it’s free agency, it’s because we’re going to put you on an island.

“And it’s not going to be easy, but that’s the task you’re given. And he’s a young player, and he’s working at it, and he’s going to get better. It’s just, it’s going to take a little bit of time here, and we’re going to work through a few of these things. But look, every young player, they have these ebbs and flows of their career or of a second year, things of that nature. And so he’s going to be, alright, man, we’re just going to keep working through it. And look, we’ll probably use Amik (Robertson) on stuff too. Amik’s a good player. So we’re going to mix it up a little bit.”

The Lions used Amik Robertson on the outside in the final three games of the regular season last year, and he flourished in that spot. Most notably against the Minnesota Vikings when he held Justin Jefferson to just three catches for 54 yards on nine targets. So seeing him on the outside, even if it’s just for some snaps and not an entire game, is going to help Detroit.

As for Arnold, there have been some encouraging developments this season. For example, there were three occasions against the Bears when he was in a position to get an interception. On Monday night, he allowed two catches for 44 yards in the first half and then just one catch for 11 yards on three targets in the second half. There’s stuff there that you can look at and see that he’s getting better.

So, time sharing snaps with Robertson will help him grow some more and have opportunities to make plays when he’s on the field, thereby growing his confidence even more. It’s pretty clear the Lions are not giving up on him here and understand that this is a spot that a lot of cornerbacks go through in their careers. This shouldn’t be looked at as Detroit giving up on him or that he is a bust. It could not be much farther from the truth.
