The Lions could be on the verge of starting Alim McNeill’s return to the field this week, what needs to happen first
The Lions could be getting Alem McNeill back a lot sooner than the initial November expecation
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell dropped some big news on Monday when he said that the Lions may look to bring back one of their very best defensive linemen to practice this week. It’s an absolute game-changer if it happens.
The Lions could start Alim McNeill’s 21-day clock on Wednesday
“There’s a good chance we may start Mac’s clock this week,” Campbell said Monday. “So that’s good. We want to make sure that we check all those boxes before we say that’s what we’re going to do, for sure. But it’s trending the right way. Mac, he’s about ready to go, you know. And I think he’s tired of training. He’s trained all he can train. He’s done everything you can do. He just needs football. So he’s done an unbelievable job.”
Explaining the 21-day clock for the Detroit Lions and Alim McNeill
- When a player is returning from IR, a team will open a 21-day clock for that player
- This means the player has 21 days to practice and show that he’s healthy
- If the player is not activated within those 21 days, the team then has to return the player to IR, and their season is over
- Players can be activated at any time during those 21 days
Getting McNeill back would be huge. So far, the Lions have 75 pressures and 15 sacks in four games, and that’s already at the top of the league in production. They’re also ranked fifth in defensive DVOA. This is without McNeill, who had 45 pressures and four sacks last year. So, you can only imagine what having him back can do for a defense that is already showing to be one of the best in the NFL this year.
