The Detroit Lions gave fans some bad news on Monday when Dan Campbell informed everyone that safety Ifeatu Melifonwu will be out for longer with a new injury.

"This is going to come up anyway. He just, he had something come up, and he's not going to be, he won't be ready for a while. He's not going to be ready for a while."

Melifonwu’s 21 day clock was just started on the 5th and he was expected to be activated and return from injured reserve this week after his ankle injury was healed up. Now he has a hand injury.

Despite saying he’ll be out for a while, the Lions still activated him on Monday and put him on the 53-man roster. What’s the reason for that? Pride of Detroit’s Jeremy Reisman got the answer.

So the Lions had to do this to prevent his clock running out which would put him on injured reserve for the rest of the year. With him activated, they can now put him on short term IR for four weeks and then have a chance to get him back  for the end of the season and the playoffs. This is a good sign that the Lions expect to have him back at some point. We'll see where things go from here and we will keep you updated.
