The Miami Dolphins are now charged with a daunting set of decisions. Miami, along with the rest of the NFL, must cut nearly half of the players on their summer roster in preparation for the regular season. By 4:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, every team will be at 53 players. And 24 hours later, a series of waiver claims will be processed, and there will be a new wave of players who initially made rosters who could get some bad news of their own.

It’s an ugly but necessary part of the business. For the Dolphins in particular, coach Mike McDaniel outlined what the process looks like after Miami’s 14-6 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night to close the preseason.

“What I do know is this team and the collection of 90 (players) have made our jobs very difficult. So the way that looks is you go in (Sunday) morning, you watch the tape with the coaches. And I’ll get together with all of them and then get together with the coordinators and with Chris (Grier), and we’ll start chopping away at some of these difficult decisions. But it’s not easy by any stretch. I really keep myself from making any rush to judgment and allow guys to really play it out and try to settle things on the field…and then fitting that puzzle piece together, which is your 53 plus 16.”
