Dolphins bolster secondary by finally signing a long-rumored target for their cornerback room
After a long, rumored interest, Miami finally gets their guy.
After all this time, it’s finally done. The Miami Dolphins have reportedly had eyes for one free agent cornerback in particular all offseason — but things had failed to come together for Miami and former Buffalo Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas. Miami had reportedly hosted Douglas on a visit this summer but their contract offer fell on deaf ears and the Dolphins appeared to pivot by signing Jack Jones and Mike Hilton when reports suggested that Douglas had moved on from Miami’s overtures.
It turns out playing for someone is better than playing for no one. And on the day in which all 32 NFL franchises are trying to cut down their rosters, Miami is officially adding to theirs. They’ve agreed to terms with Douglas — putting some veteran experience into a cornerback room that desperately needs it.
Miami Dolphins agree to terms with veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas
The reports have Miami and Douglas agreeing to a one-year, $3 million contract in 2025. Per the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the terms of this contract are reportedly “very, very similar” to Miami’s previous two offers. Given Miami’s cost conscious effort this offseason to re-balance their books, it isn’t a surprise that Miami stuck to their price on this front.
So what does Douglas bring to the table? 19 career interceptions, 120 career games and 80 career starts, including 15 last season with Miami’s most notable AFC East rival these days, the Buffalo Bills. Douglas has been a successful starter in both Green Bay and Buffalo but is just days away (August 29th) from that magic number for cornerbacks: the age of 30. Douglas isn’t the fastest or most explosive cornerback but he does offer great instincts, good ball skills, and he is a reliable tackler — all should profile well to what Miami wants to do defensively in 2025.
Now it is just a matter of whether or not Douglas seizes a starting role from either Storm Duck or Jack Jones in time for Miami’s Week 1 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
