Former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Palmer has everyone talking about Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes this week.
Palmer recently suggested that Burrow is a better quarterback than Mahomes.
"I think Joe is the best quarterback in the league," said Palmer on The QB Room. "I know Patrick is phenomenal, but I just think Joe’s more consistent. He’s more consistent. He’s more accountable to run the system and the play that’s called and not feel like, “Well, he didn’t win last time and get open for me, so I’m gonna do it with my feet,” and then before you know it, you’re sacked for a four-yard loss because you tried to make two or three guys miss."
It seems like every NFL analyst has given their take on the Burrow vs Mahomes debate after hearing Palmer's comments.
ESPN analyst Ryan Clark, who played college football at LSU (nearly two decades before Burrow played for LSU), gave his opinion this week.
And Clark, despite sharing an LSU connection with Burrow, is Team Mahomes in this debate.
"He (Palmer) talked about all the Patrick Mahomes stuff that Joe Burrow actually can't do," said Clark. "Don't get me wrong, I think Joe Burrow is mobile. I think he is athletic. I believe he can manipulate the pocket and feel things around him like not many other quarterbacks in the world could do. But we're talking about Patrick 'flipped the ball with your left hand' Mahomes. Patrick 'running to the sideline, go no look to Jet McKinnon'."
"I get it, Joe Burrow is good," added Clark. "Joe Burrow is probably going to win an MVP one day. But we can't talk about the Houdini stuff [from] Patrick Mahomes and compare him (Burrow) to it. "Talk about something else, make another argument. But no, this ain't it."
It's hard for even the biggest Bengals/Burrow fan to make an argument against Mahomes being the best quarterback in the league right now. He has the resumé to back up opinions like the one from Clark.
All Burrow cares about is bringing a championship (or championships) to Cincinnati. And until he does that, he'll probably agree with Clark. Maybe that can serve as motivation for Burrow in 2023 as he attempts to take the Bengals back to the Super Bowl for another shot at the Lombardi Trophy.
