The first reaction from Green Bay Packers fans when the Miami Dolphins announced the firing of head coach Mike McDaniel probably was something like “He can be a very intriguing offensive coordinator under Matt LaFleur.” While that’s true to a certain extent, the most likely outcome is probably not as sexy for the Packers.

First, McDaniel has a real shot at getting another head coaching opportunity. And if he doesn’t, a chance to build his own offense as a coordinator working for a CEO or defensive-type of head coach, and not in the shadows of a great offensive mind.

Worse than that, though, the Dolphins could find their replacement options for both Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel in Green Bay.

Packers’ duo could be the perfect duo for Miami

The Miami Dolphins have already interviewed Packers vice president of player personnel, Jon-Eric Sullivan, to the GM position. He advanced to the second round of interviews and is one of the four finalists for the job. Our own Kyle Crabbs wrote about why Sullivan is the perfect name for the position.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Dolphins expect to decide who their next GM will be over the next few days, and the chosen one will help the team hire its next head coach.

If Sullivan is hired, it immediately becomes more likely that he will want Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as his head coach.

The Packers would then lose two important pieces — and maybe more as Sullivan and Hafley would build their staff.

So far, just one team has officially requested an interview with Jeff Hafley, the Tennessee Titans. The New York Giants are expected to do so, and the Dolphins could enter the dance soon — they are also monitoring the Matt LaFleur contract situation in Green Bay.

The Packers are focused on the playoffs, but the coaching and front office hiring cycle is at full force, and it’s hard to escape from that.
