The Green Bay Packers had a real decision to make this offseason. With head coach Matt LaFleur entering the final year of his contract, new CEO and president Ed Policy could have opted to fire him after a disappointing end to the past season, but the franchise decided to extend LaFleur’s deal and keep what has been a successful and stable operation over the last several years.

And that’s exactly what quarterback Jordan Love wanted.

“To be able to keep Matt around is awesome, and I’m very happy about that,” Love said during a press conference before the softball charity game. “I think anytime in the NFL, I’ve done this in college where the coaches leave and you’re in a new system, it’s tough.”

Offensive structure in place

Jordan Love has been in the NFL since 2020, and is the Packers starter since 2023. It’s the same offensive structure, and one that has been extremely efficient. Over the past three years, Green Bay’s offense is fifth in EPA/play and seventh in success rate.

“It’s a lot to be able to learn a whole new system and new terminology,” Love added. “So for a quarterback to be able to stay in the same system, keep the same terminology, it definitely helps me, helps my teammates out, that we get to hit the ground running when we get to OTAs and just build off what we’ve done the past couple years.”

Despite the criticism, the Packers kept most of their offensive staff in place — LaFleur as the head coach and play-caller, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich, and passing game coordinator Jason Vrable. For Jordan Love, the big difference is his new position coach, who’s actually not so new. After Sean Mannion left, Luke Getsy was promoted from senior offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach/assistant head coach — offense. Getsy was Love’s first quarterbacks coach in the NFL and got back to Green Bay after experiences as an offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders.
