Packers unintentionally reveal what their defensive scheme will look like with final coaching staff moves in place
Matt LaFleur has finalized his new staff.
Publicly, the Green Bay Packers have tried to say the defense can be a 4-3 or 3-4 base with Jonathan Gannon. But actions speak louder than words. The team announced the finalized version of the coaching staff on Thursday, and some changes make it clear that the defense is going back to a 3-4 base after two years.
Defensive changes
Based on what hadn’t been reported yet, the message became clear. Former defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington was promoted to outside linebackers coach, run game coordinator, and assistant head coach – defense. While the AHC title is meaningful, the first part is telling. He will specifically coach the outside linebackers, the edge defenders in a 3-4 scheme.
Meanwhile, former assistant defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase was promoted to defensive line coach. After two years, the Packers are once again separating the edges from the interior defensive linemen.
More changes
Luke Getsy is the new quarterbacks coach, as expected, but he was also promoted to assistant head coach – offense. Last year, he was the senior offensive assistant. DeMarcus Covington and Luke Getsy will split the role that was previously executed by special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia as the assistant head coach.
The other previously unreported moves: Scott Fuchs was hired as a defensive analyst and former quality control coach Rob Grosso was promoted to assistant wide receivers coach. Special teams quality control Cory Harkey and defensive assistant Jeff Koonz have been both promoted to assistant special teams coaches.
