Jordan Love teams up with Micah Parsons to send a firm message as they recruit an elite weapon to the Packers
Everyone loves George Pickens.
Micah Parsons is not the only one trying to recruit wide receiver George Pickens to the Green Bay Packers. Quarterback Jordan Love would love to have an elite weapon at his disposal, and he has a close relationship with the pending free agent.
On Thursday, Love said on “Up and Adams Show” that he supports the idea of signing the receiver, who had a strong season with the Dallas Cowboys. Love, Pickens, and Parsons are all represented by agent David Mulugheta.
“I mean, if you can bring in another player, George Pickens, he had a phenomenal year,” Love said. “He’s a great player. I would love to have the most talented players on our team at all times. And, you know, we’ll see. You’re not in control.”
Peak value in free agency
Pickens is set to reach free agency after a career year with the Dallas Cowboys. He had 93 catches for 1,429 yards, and nine touchdowns after being traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers. But it’s still an unlikely scenario for the Packers.
First, it’s uncertain that he will actually hit free agency in the first place. The Cowboys might simply use the franchise tag to keep him around next season, or to reach an extension before March.
Second, if Pickens goes to the market, the Packers are not the most likely team to sign him. Spotrac projects that the receiver will get a four-year, $122.4 million contract ($30.6 million per year).
Nevertheless, Jordan Love knows what type of athlete Pickens is.
“I throw him a go ball, I watch him go up and get it,” Love said when asked what type of route they could master together. “You know, I played basketball with him. I know what type of bounce he’s got.”
The Packers passed on the opportunity to draft Pickens back in 2022, even when there was an obvious need at wide receiver and the team had two-first rounders. The Packers moved up to the 34th overall pick and selected Christian Watson instead.
Last year, Green Bay could’ve easily traded what the Cowboys spent to acquire Pickens — a third-rounder and a Day 3 swap — but opted not to.
Moreover, the Packers have a strong depth at wide receiver. Watson is still on the roster and under contract through 2026 (with a new extension in play), Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks are also under contract for another year, and the team drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams last offseason.
On Wednesday, general manager Brian Gutekunst said that the team is in a good salary cap shape to make investments if necessary. However, a high-priced wide receiver is probably not what Gutekunst will look for in the market.
