Matt LaFleur future with the Packers moves closer to resolution as latest report hints at what is about to happen next
Green Bay is expected to give LaFleur a contract extension in the offseason.
Matt LaFleur is in his seventh season with the Green Bay Packers, and the expectation from both sides is that the relationship won’t end anytime soon. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the parties will sit after the season to discuss a contract extension — and the expectation is something will eventually get done.
“Sources say the Packers plan to engage head coach Matt LaFleur in contract discussions shortly after the season ends, with the mutual goal of extending his contract. LaFleur, whose deal expires following the 2026 season, has a 76-40-1 record and is widely considered to be one of the better coaches in the NFL.” Ian Rapoport.
Contract situation
Matt LaFleur has been with the Packers since 2019, and he received a contract extension back in 2022 tying him with Green Bay through 2026. That means he would enter next year as a lame duck coach.
Back in the offseason, new president Ed Policy mentioned that he didn’t want to extend LaFleur immediately, but he wouldn’t want to enter a contract year without an extension in place. That could theoretically add some pressure to LaFleur’s status, but it was mostly the Packer Way — they would sit and find a market value deal before the final season.
Matt LaFleur is making something in the $8 million-$9 million range a year for the Packers, but that number will go significantly up in the new extension.
The Packers play the Chicago Bears in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday night. But, according to Rapoport, the outcome of the game won’t affect a potential extension for LaFleur. “LaFleur’s job status will not be determined by four quarters of football tonight in Chicago,” Rapoport wrote.
General manager Brian Gutekunst is also set to enter a contract year in 2026, and the executive is expected to receive an extension as well.
Money could be a factor, but while Green Bay can’t overspend based on the franchise structure, the team is always willing to pay its top pieces. And it shouldn’t be any different with one of the most respected and valued head coaches in football.
