A week after losing Anthony Campanile, who was hired to be the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator, the Green Bay Packers have a new linebackers coach. The team is promoting defensive assistant Sean Duggan to fill the role, according to NFL Network's insider Tom Pelissero.
Campanile was the linebackers coach and run game coordinator. The second role, at least so far, will remain open. When the Packers hired Campanile in 2024, the run game coordinator role was more of a tool to hire him with a higher salary, since he had just had interviews with the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants for their defensive coordinator jobs.
Sean Duggan is a trusted member of the staff and followed defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley from Boston College to the Packers last offseason. The other coach that left BC to be in Green Bay is Vince Oghobaase, the assistant defensive line coach.
Track record
Duggan is 31 years old and played college football at Boston College as a linebacker—he was a team captain in 2014. Following his college career, he immediately started coaching as the Boston College graduate assistant.
He spent time coaching linebackers at Hawaii and UMass before getting another graduate assistant job at Ohio State under Hafley in 2019. When Hafley got the Boston College head coaching job, it was automatic for Duggan to come back to his alma mater.
Sean Duggan was the linebackers coach for three seasons before being promoted to co-defensive coordinator last year—in addition to his LB coach position.
For the Packers, he was a defensive assistant for a season.
Staff
Now, the Packers will have to replace two lower-level assistants on the staff. In addition to Duggan being promoted, former defensive quality control coach Anthony Perkins will follow Campanile to the Jaguars as a secondary coach.
