Roster rules
There are several ways to reduce the roster. A player can be released, waived, or designated to many injury lists that don’t count towards the 53-man roster.
Released: When a vested veteran (those who have at least four accrued seasons in the NFL) is cut from a team. These players are not required to pass through waivers and can immediately become street free agents.
Waived: Players who have not accrued four seasons in the NFL are waived instead of being released. The 31 other NFL teams will have a chance to claim waived players on their 53-man roster by 11 a.m. CT on August 27 and absorb their original contracts. If players are not claimed on waivers, they become free agents. Waiver priority this time of year is determined by team records from the previous season. The team with the worst record will get the top waiver priority, in this case, the Tennessee Titans. The Packers are currently 23rd in waiver priority.
Waived/injured: Players with fewer than four accrued seasons who have injury can be waived with an injury designation. Other teams have the chance to claim him. If that doesn’t happen, the player reverts back to the original team’s injured reserve. Usually in these instances, the original team and the player have an injury settlement in place for a definitive release.
Injured reserve/designated for return: Since last year, NFL teams can designate up to two players to return from injured reserve without the necessity for them to make the initial 53-man roster. The designation has to be made at the moment of the move on cutdown day.
Injured reserve: Players placed on the injured reserve before making the 53-man roster and without a designation for return are out for the season, unless they agree to an injury settlement.
Physically unable to perform/non-football injury/non-football illness lists: These lists are for players who didn’t pass a physical before the end of training camp. The difference from PUP to NFI is that, on PUP, the player got injured during a team activity. In both cases, the players can return after missing at least four games to start the season.
