Packers’ 53-man Roster Prediction: Bubble players make their case in preseason finale as roster cuts loom ahead
Gutekunst and LaFleur have a lot of work to do over the next few days.
The preseason is over, and the Green Bay Packers have to build their initial 53-man roster until Tuesday. Over the next few days, general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur will lead a flurry of moves, including cuts and placing players on injured reserve or inactive physically unable to perform list.
The final exhibition game, a 20-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks, helped the leadership group answer some questions about bubble players, and now it’s time to make our final predictions for the roster that will open the regular season.
Quarterbacks (2)
- In: Jordan Love, Malik Willis
- Out: Sean Clifford, Taylor Elgersma
The QB3 competition was on. Clifford may be ahead because he played before Elgersma against the Seahawks, while the Canadian may be ahead because he’s more talented. But that’s a discussion for the practice squad prediction, since the Packers will most likely just keep two quarterbacks on the 53 anyway.
Running backs (3)
- In: Josh Jacobs, Chris Brooks, Emanuel Wilson
- Out: Amar Johnson, Israel Abanikanda, Tyrion Davis-Price
- IR-DFR: MarShawn Lloyd
It’s unfortunate that we’re here again with MarShawn Lloyd, but he injured his hamstring on Saturday and will miss time. It’s possible that he starts the season on IR, which could mean a 53-man roster spot for Israel Abanikanda, who played a lot in the preseason. However, the Packers would probably be able to keep Abanikanda on the PS.
Wide receivers (6)
- In: Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, Matthew Golden, Savion Williams, Malik Heath
- Out: Mecole Hardman, Julian Hicks, Cornelius Johnson, Will Sheppard, Isaiah Neyor, Kawaan Baker
- PUP: Christian Watson
Mecole Hardman and Malik Heath are important for different reasons. Heath is ahead on offense, but Hardman is impactful as a return option. Heath can also play other roles on special teams, so I’ll give him the preference here.
Tight ends (3)
- In: Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave, John FitzPatrick
- Out: Ben Sims, Messiah Swinson, Johnny Lumpkin
FitzPatrick is basically a lock to make the team. He is active on offense and one of the best special teamers on the roster. Ben Sims will compete with players from other positions.
Offensive line (9)
- In: Rasheed Walker, Aaron Banks, Elgton Jenkins, Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom, Jordan Morgan, Anthony Belton, Jacob Monk, Darian Kinnard
- Out: Donovan Jennings, Kadeem Telfort, Lecitus Smith, Trey Hill, Tyler Cooper, Brant Banks, J.J. Lippe
- PUP: John Williams
- Injured reserve: Travis Glover
With Elgton Jenkins sitting out the final preseason game, the Packers started Sean Rhyan at center and Donovan Jennings at right guard. Jennings had his chance, but the Packers’ move to acquire versatile lineman Darian Kinnard is not a great sign for his future.
Defensive tackles (6)
- In: Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, Colby Wooden, Karl Brooks, Warren Brinson, Nazir Stackhouse
- Out: James Ester, Devonte O’Malley
With Kenny Clark and Devonte Wyatt not available, Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks started at defensive tackle for the Packers, a strong indication that they are roster locks. The big question here is if they will be willing to keep six interior linemen, but Stackhouse is talented enough to justify a roster spot, even if he will be inactive for most of the season—and the Packers could elevate players from the PS for gameday to give the team more special teams options.
Edges (5)
- In: Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Kingsley Enagbare, Barryn Sorrell, Brenton Cox Jr.
- PUP: Collin Oliver
- Out: Arron Mosby, Deslin Alexandre
Collin Oliver hasn’t practiced yet, so it’s fair to project him to start the season on PUP at this point. Barryn Sorrell is also hurt, so maybe he starts the season on IR, but we’re not projecting that here. Arron Mosby has a shot if the Packers decide to keep six edges.
Linebackers (5)
- In: Edgerrin Cooper, Quay Walker, Isaiah McDuffie, Ty’Ron Hopper, Isaiah Simmons
- Out: Kristian Welch, Jamon Dumas-Johnson, Jared Bartlett
Isaiah Simmons and Kristian Welch might very well make the team due to their special teams abilities. Simmons is a former top 10 pick and has been ahead on defense, despite some tough preseason moments, so he gets the final spot. Welch could still be a useful piece on the PS.
Cornerbacks (6)
- In: Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, Carrington Valentine, Bo Melton, Kalen King, Kamal Hadden
- Out: Micah Robinson, Corey Ballentine, Johnathan Baldwin, Tyron Herring
Kalen King showed good flashes in the preseason and had several great plays against the Seahawks, basically securing a roster spot. Micah Robinson is a rookie seventh-rounder, but Kamal Hadden recovered from a tough game against the Colts. Robinson and Baldwin could be back on the PS if they clear waivers, while Ballentine doesn’t need to go through waivers as a vested veteran.
Safeties (5)
- In: Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, Javon Bullard, Zayne Anderson, Kitan Oladapo
- Out: Jaylin Simpson
- IR-DFR: Omar Brown
The Packers have a lot of depth here, and Omar Brown is injured. Jaylin Simpson arrived during this past week and already has a shot at the PS.
Special teamers (3)
- In: Brandon McManus, Daniel Whelan, Matthew Orzech
- Out: Mark McNamee
The Packers kept all three of their special teamers, re-signing McManus and Whelan. Mark McNamee is part of the International Pathway Program, so the plan is to get him back on the practice squad with a roster exemption.
