Packers free agent once assumed to be gone suddenly has a chance to stick around after latest report
Packers are still trying to keep Romeo Doubs.
When the Green Bay Packers extended Christian Watson with a year left on his deal, coming off an ACL injury, and paired it with their draft class, which included two first-round picks at the position in Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, the general assumption was that Romeo Doubs would leave.
That might still happen, but don’t rule out the possibility of the Packers finding a way to keep their leading receiver in 2025.
ESPN reports that the Packers still want Romeo Doubs
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the Packers will at least speak with Doubs’ representatives and try to reach a reasonable contract for both sides.
“The Packers can try to re-sign free agent receiver Romeo Doubs and/or extend tight end Tucker Kraft, a 2027 free agent,” Fowler wrote. “The door isn’t closed on Doubs in Green Bay. I’m expecting both sides to at least have some dialogue and see if a return makes sense. The Raiders and Titans will have my attention for free agent receivers. Both desperately need a difference-maker on the outside.”
The Tucker Kraft part is not shocking by any means — general manager Brian Gutekunst said in his press conference this past week that the front office had already been in touch with Kraft’s agent to discuss an early extension.
But the Doubs’ part is at least surprising. Spotrac projects that Doubs will get a four-year, $48 million contract in free agency ($12 million per year), but with how free agency naturally is, and how the wide receiver market specifically has been, he might get a much higher salary than that.
The Packers are slightly over the projected cap space. Considering the roster’s weak spots and receiver depth, Doubs wasn’t perceived as a priority to keep around.
A fourth-round pick back in 2022, Doubs is coming off a career year in the final season of his rookie contract. The receiver led the Packers with 724 yards, with 55 receptions and six touchdowns. Over his four years in Green Bay, the receiver totaled 202 receptions for 2,424 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns.
After one year playing with Aaron Rodgers as a rookie, Doubs has been a reliable weapon for Jordan Love — and both created a strong connection, particularly near the end zone.
It’s still up in the air whether the Packers will be able to extend Doubs, especially since teams like the Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee Titans lead the league in projected cap space and have a much more obvious need at receiver. But the front office is at least considering that possibility, and that’s already a notable development.
