Packers put their plan in motion to make the defense better at the perfect time as urgency and opportunity align
Trevon Diggs will make his Packer debut on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Green Bay Packers won’t miss any time putting their plan to being better on defense in motion. Claimed off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys earlier this week, cornerback Trevon Diggs will be officially active against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 18.
The decision will cost Green Bay $58,823, which Diggs has in per-game roster bonuses from his contract originally signed with the Cowboys back in 2023.
Head coach Matt LaFleur and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley indicated that Diggs’ participation depended on his ability to pick up the scheme — and his ability to learn the basics was good enough for at least for him to be active.
Packers’ inactives vs. Vikings
- QB Malik Willis
- LB Quay Walker
- RB Josh Jacobs
- WR Dontayvion Wicks
- S Xavier McKinney
- T Zach Tom
- LB Edgerrin Cooper
Who’s in and out
Quarterback Malik Willis (right shoulder/hamstring) is inactive, just like right tackle Zach Tom (back/knee). As expected, wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks is also officially inactive. He left the Baltimore Ravens game with a concussion, didn’t practice throughout the week, and was listed as doubtful to play on Friday.
Wide receiver Savion Williams and guard Donovan Jennings had already been placed on injured reserve. Guard John Williams (PUP) and linebacker/special teamer Nick Niemann (injured reserve) were not activated either, and all of these four had been ruled out on Friday.
Plan to rest players
The Packers decided to rest some key players, but with 55 available players (between the 53-man roster and the two elevations from the practice squad) and the necessity to activate 48 players for gameday, there was not much room to keep those players inactive as healthy scratches.
The healthy players who won’t be active are linebackers Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper, running back Josh Jacobs, and safety Xavier McKinney.
So several pieces are active and will most likely not play, overloading the bottom of the roster. Quarterback Jordan Love is expected to serve as a backup to third-stringer Clayton Tune, for example, and running backs Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks will share the backfield reps.
