The Green Bay Packers have just lost an offensive lineman. Center/guard hybrid Lecitus Smith has signed with the New England Patriots off the Packers’ practice squad, and now he will be a member of the Patriots’ 53-man roster.
We had mentioned Lecitus Smith as a solid option for the Patriots to improve the offensive line during the season, and former Packers executive Eliot Wolf is now calling the shots in New England as the executive vice president of player personnel. The Patriots also have former Packers offensive tackle Caleb Jones on the practice squad.
The Packers had originally signed Lecitus Smith in May to compete for a roster spot. He had a solid preseason performance playing mostly with the threes. The veteran didn’t make the 53-man roster, but was brought back to the practice squad. Now, he gets a better chance elsewhere.
A sixth-round pick in 2022, Smith has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL. He has been active for ten games, all of them for the Cardinals in 2022.
The Packers don't have much depth on the interior of the offensive line. The starters are Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, and Sean Rhyan. Rookie first-round pick Jordan Morgan has rotated at right guard. Beyond that, Green Bay has fifth-round pick center Jacob Monk on the active roster and undrafted rookie Donovan Jennings on the practice squad.
Corresponding move
The Packers have already added another piece to replace the loss. The team announced the signing of rookie offensive tackle Spencer Rolland. Undrafted out of University of North Carolina, Rolland spent his first NFL training camp with the Minnesota Vikings.
Packers have already decided how to proceed with Jordan Morgan’s development path
Rookie will compete for a starting job with Sean Rhyan and Josh Myers
