Packers make their intentions clear with a championship window while still preserving long-term flexibility
It’s Jordan Love, Micah Parsons, and a lot of flexibility to build around them.
The Green Bay Packers have a clear process when building their roster. They believe in athleticism, upside and raw potential, draft and development. When signing players, the signing bonus is the entire guarantee — unless you’re a franchise quarterback or Micah Parsons. But by the way the Packers have built the team and structured contracts, it’s clear that they project a two-year run with this version of the roster, keeping full flexibility after that.
“We’re really process-driven around here, being in this thing every single year,” Gutekunst said early last year. “You try not to look too far down the road, more than two or three years out, but I’m not a big believer in windows.”
Two-year window
It’s not that the Packers are going all-in to win a championship in 2026 or 2027, but it’s a focus on these two years with the current roster. You can see that by the way the top contracts are built and their approach in free agency this offseason.
First of all, Jordan Love and Parsons are the primary building blocks, and see how their contracts work. Love has a $36.122 million cap hit this year, $42.457 million in 2027, and it jumps to $74.2 million in 2028 — likely, projecting a new contract extension, since Love won’t have any guarantees left by 2028, the final year of his current deal.
The same applies to Parsons. His guarantees go through 2027, and his cap hit jumps from $26.845 million in 2027 to $42.288 million in 2028 — it goes to $73.788 million in 2028, when an extension or release is inevitable.
Looking at the rest of the roster, it’s mostly the same approach. Excluding rookie deals, there are several ones expiring soon. Wide receiver Christian Watson and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt are in a contract year now, while running back Josh Jacobs and safety Xavier McKinney are under contract through 2027.
The only veterans beyond Love and Parsons with deals beyond 2027 are right tackle Zach Tom, a real building block, and left guard Aaron Banks. Watson himself and tight end Tucker Kraft could get extensions soon — but again, they are building blocks.
Offseason moves
The decisions made by general manager Brian Gutekunst reinforce the perception that the Packers are keeping their options open after two seasons. Cornerback Benjamin St-Juste and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, the two biggest offseason additions, signed two-year deals — wide receiver Skyy Moore signed a one-year contract. Running back Chris Brooks also re-signed on a two-year contract.
The next two years are key for this version of the roster. The players who perform at a high level will possibly receive a new long-term deal, but the front office structured the roster in a way to allow major turnover after 2027. The process will keep going, but it will be a clean slate to make new decisions.
