The Green Bay Packers will be without star running back Aaron Jones on Monday night when they take on the Las Vegas Raiders. So, naturally, the team had to bring in reinforcements.
Per the team's website, the Packers signed Patrick Taylor to the 53-man roster in order to help alleviate Jones' absence. The team had already used up Taylor's previous three roster elevations, therefore, they had to sign him to the 53 if they wanted him available for tonight's game.
As a result, Taylor will receive three game checks over the next few weeks, even if he's cut. He currently has three accrued seasons under his belt, so each game will represent 1/18th of the NFL's $1.010 million minimum base salary for players with three years of experience. In all, Taylor will make $168,333, which is obviously a whole lot more than the $48k and some change he'd make over that span of time on the practice squad.
In order to make room for Taylor, the Packers released veteran OLB Justin Hollins. The Packers' EDGE group was very deep thanks to the arrival of UDFA Brenton Cox Jr., so the move makes sense, ultimately.
The Packers also promoted Corey Ballentine for tonight's game. This is Ballentine's third elevation, therefore, he will have to get signed to the 53-man roster if the Packers wish to elevate him again in the future.
