ESPN has Packers' Zach Tom as potential difference-maker in 2023

Right now, the Green Bay Packers offensive line is looking pretty good heading into training camp. Green Bay Packers guard Zach Tom (50) blocks Chicago Bears defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad (55) quarter of their game Sunday, December 4, 2022 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. The Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears 28-19. Tom was filling in for offensive tackle David Bakhtiari, who had his appendix removed earlier in the week.

Right now, the Green Bay Packers offensive line is looking pretty good heading into training camp.

All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari and Pro Bowl guard Elgton Jenkins are the healthiest they've been in a couple of years and last year's starting center and right guard, Josh Myers and Jon Runyan, are back for another go.

There's also second-year OL Zach Tom, who has a chance to make the Packers' front five a top-10 unit in 2023.

Tom had a very solid rookie year. For starters, he showed off the versatility the Packers look for in their offensive linemen. Per Pro Football Focus, Tom recorded snaps at left tackle (295), left guard (96), right tackle (84), and right guard (19). It wasn't like he was just mixed in throughout games, either: He started five games at left tackle, two games at left guard, and two games at right tackle.

He also played pretty well at every position, showing he's capable of bouncing around, yet still providing quality snaps.

According to reports from OTAs and minicamp, Tom has been running with the 1s at right tackle, along with Yosh Nijman. The Packers also had him playing at right guard and even center. It'll be interesting to see what everything looks like when the pads come on during training camp, but either way, it's clear what the plan is, for now. And it's safe to say Tom's the front-runner, even if it's not by much, for the starting right tackle job.

If the Packers can find themselves a solid option to bookend the offensive line, that would be huge. That's why it makes sense that ESPN recently named Tom as the "nonstarter to watch" heading into training camp:

OL Zach Tom. A fourth-round pick in 2022, Tom played 462 snaps last season, most of which came at LT. He recorded a well-above-average 93% pass block win rate at tackle when he was there — impressive for a rookie. – Seth Walder, ESPN

Tom's strength is his pass-blocking, which is obviously a big deal for Jordan Love. PFF gave Tom an overall pass-blocking grade of 78.1 in 2022, which placed him 26th out of 131 qualifying players. The criteria was tackles and guards that finished the season with at least 489 blocking snaps.

He does need to improve in the run game and that will be important to keep an eye on this year. If he can even take one step forward, it would really help the Packers offense open up the playbook and really take advantage of its versatility.

And speaking of versatility, that's a key factor with Tom and it also plays into how he can be such a huge asset in 2023. If Bakhtiari or Jenkins were to go down, Tom could step in and play either position and Nijman could take over at right tackle. Sure, it wouldn't be good, at all, to lose either one of the aforementioned Pro Bowlers, but, Tom's presence would certainly help soften the blow.

The Packers were recently hailed by ESPN as one of the top teams that has been collecting draft steals for the past decade, now, and with Tom being a fourth-round pick, it certainly looks like their one their way to hijacking another.

And, how ironic is it that Bakhtiari was a fourth-rounder himself? Potentially full circle, indeed.
