The Green Bay Packers are still considering options to the bottom of the roster ahead of training camp. According to James Larsen, who covers the UFL, the Packers will work out defensive back Derrick Langford, who spent the last couple of seasons with the San Antonio Brahmas.
Langford played college football at Washington State and went undrafted. He spent training camp time with the New York Jets back in 2023 and had preseason action, but didn't make the roster. In seven UFL games, the cornerback played seven games, with 13 tackles and four pass breakups. He is 25 years old, 6-1, and 205 pounds.
The Packers have given chances for minor league players over the past few offseasons, so this is not exactly a surprising move—punter Daniel Whelan, for example, had an experience with the DC Defenders of the XFL before signing with Green Bay.
Derrick Langford played four seasons at Washington State. He played 39 games from 2019 to 2022, with 92 tackles (two for loss), four interceptions, 13 passes defended, and three forced fumbles. As a senior, he had a pick-six.
Need at cornerback
The Packers lost Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell this offseason, so it's natural that general manager Brian Gutekunst will look for options to replace them. The team signed Nate Hobbs to a big deal in free agency, but also added Isaiah Dunn and Gregory Junior in free agency, in addition to taking Micah Robinson in the seventh round of the draft.
The starting options on the roster are Keisean Nixon, Hobbs, and Carrington Valentine. Beyond them, there are several players battling for roster spots—both on the active 53-man roster and practice squad.
The CB room also has Kamal Hadden and Kalen King, who finished last season on the PS, and undrafted rookies Johnathan Baldwin and Tyron Herring.
