Hard Knocks fan favorite headlines 3 most likely surprise cuts for Lions after training camp wraps up
The Detroit Lions' final preseason game is just two days away. For some it's going to be the last chance to get some tape out there and for others it's going to be the last chance to make the 53-man roster or show that they should make it over someone that's already there. The cuts […]
The Detroit Lions' final preseason game is just two days away. For some it's going to be the last chance to get some tape out there and for others it's going to be the last chance to make the 53-man roster or show that they should make it over someone that's already there.
The cuts are going to start flying right after that game concludes and there's a chance we could see some surprise cuts like we do every year. Here's three guys that could most likely shock everyone by getting cut after everything we saw at camp and why that could happen.
Malcolm Rodriguez
The linebacker spot has been considered the hardest spot to crack on this roster because it seemed like the one spot that was just figured out. But maybe it's not. Rodriguez has been hurt the last two weeks and hasn't been able to practice or play. During that time Ben Niemann has stepped up and has played pretty well in the preseason and looked good in camp.
Neimann is a special teams ace and that's typically what Rodriguez has been. Niemann might be a little better at it. The other thing that Rodriguez can do is play fullback, but Parker Hesse is locking down that spot now.
The Lions could have some serious questions to go over when it comes to cut down day. Is Rodriguez still the guy for them, or are they able to get better play elsewhere?
Craig Reynolds
We're really feeling that the Lions will carry five running backs into the season this year. But if they don't, hard decisions could be made. Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery and Sione Vaki are hard locks. If the Lions go with four guys, it's either Reynolds or Jermar Jefferson getting that final spot. We're leaning a little more towards Jefferson here because he has had a phenomenal camp and he's almost five years younger than Reynolds. There's more of long term future there. This is going to be one of the big things to watch next week.
Reynolds left the field with a lower body injury on Wednesday. This is one to keep an eye on.
James Houston
This one is so hard to figure out. On one hand the team tells you they want a player that can do a bunch of things and then they give up a three year plan to try to make Houston a SAM linebacker so he can focus on doing just one thing. It seemed like he was in dire need of a good showing on Saturday after a really bad game against the Giants, but then the Lions didn't play him. It's a very confusing situation. That's why he's on this list. Because he very well could be cut after this confusing situation.
Looking back on the Lions’ Sports Illustrated covers of the past to see if the curse is real
What a time to be alive. I've been watching the Detroit Lions for 38 years and I'm covering them for an 11th season this year. There has never been a time in which the Lions were just the talk of the league and everyone loved them. It's pretty awesome. The Lions made the cover the […]
