Houston Texans have started their quest to build off of a playoff performance in year No. 1 for DeMeco Ryans and that starts in free agency.

Houston is reportedly signing CB Jeff Okudah to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. It is a deal that gives Okudah a chance to prove his worth, while the Texans get a player who still has an upside that has yet to be reached.

Okudah was a first-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2020 but his time there was riddled by injuries and it’s forced a tough start to his NFL career. Okudah played in just 10 games in his first two seasons with the Lions, then started 15 games in 2022 when he had his best season with 77 tackles and one interception.

In 2023, Okudah started nine of 13 games with the Atlanta Falcons and recorded 44 tackles.

With Houston, Okudah will go back to Texas where he is from, and attempt to put together a nice season that earns him a multi-year deal. At the very worst it is depth for the Texans, but the ceiling is there for him to end up being a starter in Ryans’ defense.
