The Houston Texans are pursuing a trade with the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver Deebo Samuel, per a report from Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Schultz also noted that the Washington Commanders are making an aggressive play for Samuel as well. Samuel requested a trade from San Francisco a couple of weeks ago after a down year from him statistically and the 49ers record-wise.
Not counting the 2020 season when he appeared in just seven games, Samuel set career-lows in receptions with 51 and touchdowns with three in 2024. Injuries have often plagued the six-year veteran, but his struggles this past season were more due to a lack of usage in his opinion.
If the 49ers can't work out a trade for Samuel, they will likely designate him as a post-June 1 cut. However, it appears that the Texans don't want to take the chance of S.F. possibly dealing him to another team or Samuel choosing to sign elsewhere should he be released.
Despite a bumpy 2024 season, Samuel is still one of the most electric playmakers in the NFL. He is just two years removed from racking up 1,271 yards from scrimmage and 12 total TDs, and is a former Pro Bowler and First-Team All-Pro. Samuel contributes as not only a WR, but as a rusher and kick return specialist.
The Texans need a complement to Nico Collins within their WR corps. Stefon Diggs' future is up in the air as he is set to hit free agency, and Tank Dell has a long road of recovery ahead of him after a devastating knee injury that could cost him the entire 2025 season. If Houston doesn't pull the trigger on a trade for Samuel, it could consider free agents such as Hollywood Brown, Keenan Allen, or Darius Slayton.
