Colts make a puzzling selection that would be a massive mistake for the team in a new 2026 NFL mock draft

A recent selection in a 2026 NFL mock draft has the Colts reaching on a player and passing on more talented prospects who would better fit the team.

Mock drafts are already running wild as the draft season ramps up, with the Shrine Bowl already in the rear-view mirror and the Senior Bowl set to be played on Saturday.

With so many mocks out there, every pick made for the Indianapolis Colts isn’t going to be viewed as a home run selection. The fan base will even boo some picks if dont meet their standards.

A recent mock draft here at A to Z Sports had the Colts making a second-round pick that I found truly puzzling. The Colts target a position of need in the second round but reach on a prospect in a move that would feel like a massive mistake.

Colts take Alabama LB Deontae Lawson in a new mock draft

The Colts certainly have a need at LB, and it could look to use its second rounder on the position. That wouldn’t be my preferred route for them, though, given how deep the LB class is. There are a couple of guys that I think are worth that capital, though, Alabama’s Deontae Lawson is not one of them.

LBs taken after Lawson in this mock that I would prefer to see the Colts draft would be Josiah Trotter (62), Anthony Hill Jr. (70), Jacob Rodriguez (83), Aiden Fisher (88), Jake Golday (93), and Kyle Louis (not selected).

There were also so many other players chosen after the Colts’ pick at 47 that I would have preferred at the slot, such as EDGE Gabe Jacas (50), DT Lee Hunter (52), EDGE Romello Height (54), S Emmanuel McNeil-Warren (56), EDGE Zion Young, and more.

The Colts need an LB that they can trust in coverage more than Lawson, and the Alabama LB isn’t dynamic enough to warrant a second-round selection. Without a first round pick, the pressure is increased for the team to hit on its second round pick, and risking the selection on Lawson would be a massive mistake in my opinion.
