The Indianapolis Colts finished the preseason with a 2-1 record.

While the team saw multiple players show up, one starter, starting kicker Matt Gay, struggled when his number was called throughout the preseason

While the team hopes it doesn't come to this, they now have another option at kicker on their practice squad if they need to make a change this season.

Matt Gay's preseason struggles

Gay attempted four field goals during the preseason but only made one, missing wide left on three of his four attempts. This is just a year after the team elected to hand Gay the largest free-agent kicker contract in NFL history. During his first season with the team, he had his fair share of ups and downs, but the good far outweighed the bad, in my opinion.

So, seeing these types of struggles ahead of the regular season is less than ideal. His 0/2 outing against the Arizona Cardinals gets a slight pass, with his typical holder, Rigoberto Sanchez, having to miss the game at the last second due to the birth of his and his wife's most recent child. But if these struggles continue into the regular season, they now have rookie Spencer Shrader out of Notre Dame waiting on the practice squad.

Sharder was a perfect 2/2 on his field goal attempts in the preseason and made all four of his extra-point attempts. At this time, the team says they aren't worried about Gay, and Colts GM Chris Ballard made his thoughts on his kicker very clear when asked if he had any worries about his struggles in the preseason.

"No, he's a good kicker, a really good kicker. Let me defend Matt here a little bit. Not many people go into Baltimore, go five for five, and make four over 50. The guy is really talented."
