Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard announced at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine that the team plans to hold an open competition for the starting quarterback position next season.

The team won't be starting training camp with Anthony Richardson as the announced starter, and now they have officially had a formal meeting with a former five-star recruit and Texas quarterback, Quinn Ewers.

Quinn Ewers was a five-star recruit and the number one overall high school football player ahead of committing to Ohio State for his freshman year. He ended up redshirting that season and transferred to Texas in 2022. He spent his last three seasons combining for 9,128 yards, 68 touchdowns, 24 interceptions, and a 64.9 completion percentage.

Ewers is coming off his best college season, throwing for 3,472 yards and a career-high 31 touchdowns. He led the Longhorns to the College Football Playoffs, where they advanced to the semifinals but lost to Ohio State, who went on to win the National Championship. Some looked at Ewers as a first-round caliber QB prospect at one point in his career. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore, though, with many souring on his ability to make the jump to the NFL and be a franchise QB.

His up-and-down play over the years creates quite the rollercoaster when watching his film. Having an Ewers vs. Richardson QB battle could just as easily be a train wreck as it could be fireworks. No one seems too sure of where Ewers will be selected in April. Some think he's a third-round prospect; some believe he could fall into day three. If he were to fall into day three, I think he could be an intriguing option for the Colts to take a shot on, even if I personally wouldn't do it.
