It's no secret to anyone at this point that the Indianapolis Colts have a major need at tight end this offseason.

This has led multiple mock drafts to pencil one of the top options early for the Colts. During his media availability at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, head coach Shane Steichen might have hinted at the type of TE the team could target in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The TE class in the 2025 NFL Draft is respected around the league. From the top guys such as Penn State's Tyler Warren and Michigan's Colston Loveland to mid-round guys like Bowling Green's Harold Fannin Jr and LSU's Mason Taylor, this class has options for just about any type of TE a team could be looking to add.

The Colts need a makeover at TE in the worst way possible. This makes predicting what type of TE they could covet more difficult than other teams. Steichen might have given fans and the league a hint at what they could be looking for at TE ahead of the draft. He shared his mindset on what he would want to see from an early-round TE selection (if the team elects to go that route) by saying the following: "To be multiple at that position (tight end) to be able to run block and pass catch is huge. But obviously, being able to affect the game as a pass catcher on third down is huge."

From that quote, I personally think Steichen values run blocking at TE but wants the player to be a true difference-maker as a pass catcher. He especially brought up that player's ability on third down. When looking at TEs, many around the league want them to be a safety blanket for a quarterback, especially if your team has a young player under center. The Colts, for one, do with Anthony Richardson entering his third NFL season. Hearing this from Steichen today made a few TEs in the upcoming class sound like potential fits for an early selection by the Colts in April.

TEs that could fit what Steichen is looking for:

  • Tyler Warren, Penn State
  • Colston Loveland, Michigan
  • Elijah Arroyo, Miami
  • Mason Taylor, LSU
  • Harold Fannin Jr., Bowling Green
  • Oronde Gadsden II, Syracuse
