The Indianapolis Colts picked up their 2nd win of the season in dramatic fashion in Week 3.

They went into Baltimore and upset Lamar Jackson and the Ravens without their starting QB, Anthony Richardson. It wasn't always pretty but they got the job done. And in the process, we learned a few things about this team.

3 Things We Learned:

The Colts won the Zack Moss Trade

The Colts received Zack Moss and a draft pick that would later become a 5th rounder for Nyheim Hines. At the time, he was just used as a throw-in piece by the Bills to open up the roster spot for Hines.

Since that trade, Moss has revived his career with the Colts, especially this season. To give a complete picture of both's productions with their new teams, here are the two's stats since the trade:

Zack Moss:

  • 2022 (8 games): 76 rushes, 365 yards, 1 touchdown, 4 receptions, 12 yards
  • 2023 (2 games): 48 rushes, 210 yards, 1 touchdown, 6 receptions, 42 yards, 1 touchdown

Nyheim Hines:

  • 2022 (9 games): 6 rushes, -3 yards, 5 receptions, 53 yards, 1 touchdown
  • 2023: Out for the season due to injury sustained in the offseason

The Colts have needed Moss to fill in for star Jonathan Taylor multiple times so far during his tenure with the team, and he's looked more than capable of being a starting NFL RB. His strong play has likely created a constant role for himself even when/if Taylor returns.

Julius Brents is a starting CB

Julius Brents made his NFL debut in Week 3 and did so as a Colts starting CB. Brents was a healthy scratch during the team's first two weeks. The reason given by defensive coordinator Gus Bradley was due to the extensive time Brents missed during the team's offseason programming and not due to his lack of talent.

Brents proved that to be true during Week 3 with a solid performance in his debut and by the team naming him a starter. In game 1, the rookie made a game-changing play when he made a chase-down tackle that would be a forced fumble that he would also recover. It is safe to assume that we will not see Brents be a healthy scratch in the future.

Time to Pay Michael Pittman Jr.

The Colts made the decision to wait and see on extension on the offensive side of the ball. So they could adequately evaluate player's fits in Shane Steichen's offense. And while I completely understand the thought process, I believe we've already seen enough from WR Michael Pittman Jr. this season.

Pittman Jr. has been far and away the Colts most consistent offensive weapon this season. And I believe his willingness to play out the last year of his rookie deal with no negative words on the matter, paired with his strong play to start the season, warrants him being the first major extension of the Shane Steichen era.
