The Indianapolis Colts sit at 3-5 after the first eight weeks of the 2023 NFL season.
And while teams with that type of record don't usually become buyers, there are a few players that I think make a ton of sense for them to consider trading for.
CB Kaiir Elam:
Buffalo Bills CB Kaiir Elam has been a healthy scratch five times this season already. This may make some of you question why he should be traded for at all. The 2022 first-round pick was drafted that high because of the talent many around the league believed he had. Elam could be a low-risk, high-reward option for the Colts, who desperately need CB depth. I believe Elam still has the potential to be a productive starter in the NFL, but more importantly, I believe he would be a solid depth option for the Colts, who now know their current boundary options behind starters Juju Brents and Jaylon Jones are simply not good enough.
WR Jerry Jeudy:
Jeudy is a player that I've been told for a while now that the Colts brass has an interest in. And I've been told there have been multiple conversations this season. I do believe the Colts starting trio of WRs (Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, Alec Pierce) have looked really good over the past few weeks, which could have cooled their interest in Jeudy. But I do think Jeudy's ability as a route runner would be a solid addition, though. It would also allow the Colts to rotate WRs in and, in turn, keep all of their weapons more fresh throughout games. A WR coach like Reggie Wayne getting his hands on a WR of Jeudy's talent could unlock a ceiling some don't realize he still has to his game.
CB Jaylon Johnson:
If the Colts wanted to make a more significant move at CB than Elam, Chicago Bears CB Jaylon Johnson could be a perfect fit. Johnson has the ability to play on the outside or inside, which would allow the Colts to have more options when building their long-term starters at CB. This option will come at a cost, though, as multiple teams have been linked to Johnson ahead of the deadline, which could make him out of the Colts price range in terms of trade compensation as well as an impending contract extension awaiting Johnson with the Bears or a new team.
Edge Montez Sweat or Chase Young:
It has been reported that the Washington Commanders are listening to offers for both of their edge rushers, Montez Sweat and Chase Young. In my opinion, the Colts need a true dominant pass rusher opposite of Kwity Paye to optimize his talent and their defensive line. I think either of Sweat or Young would be huge moves for the Colts defense. I lean towards Young being the better move for the Colts; adding the former number two overall pick could pay dividends for this season and the foreseeable future for a team that has been looking for a consistent top pass rusher ever presence since the retirement of Robert Mathis.
