The Indianapolis Colts’ final Week 7 injury report ahead of their Week 7 matchup ruled out two of their top WRs. The first is Josh Downs, who began the week in the league’s concussion protocol. Ashton Dulin is dealing with a chest injury that has prevented him from practicing. The Colts now have no choice but to turn back to Adonai Mitchell, whom the team has demoted to the bench and to a healthy scratch over the last two weeks.

If you just looked at the box score from the Colts’ Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, you’d think Mitchell had the best game of his young NFL career. He caught three of his four targets and led the team with 96 receiving yards. However his stat line lacked a touchdown that he appeared to have scored, but further review showed that he fumbled the ball at the inch line out of the back of the end zone.

As a result, the Colts had 7 points negated, and later in the same game, he had a costly holding penalty called that wiped off a long Jonathan Taylor touchdown run. There were two significant mental errors by the Colts WR, who was plagued with such issues during his two years in the NFL. As a result, the Colts moved him down the depth chart and even took his jersey in Week 6 by making him inactive. Now he gets the chance to make up for those mistakes.

The Colts will be without Josh Downs and Ashton Dulin, so whether they like it or not, they need to trim back to Mitchell in some capacity. Colts head coach Shane Steichen believes Mitchell is ready for this opportunity, though. “He’s bounced back in the right way, he’s been in the right mindset,” said Steichen. Last year, the Colts had Mitchell fill in as Downs’ replacement in the slot when he had to miss. It’ll be interesting to see if that’s how they use him this week, or if they will give Anthony Gould the slot snaps and just have Mitchell go back to serving as the first outside WR off the bench to replace either Michael Pittman Jr. or Alec Pierce when they need a breather.
