NFL insiders share where things stand for the Colts with Alec Pierce following their choice to transition tag Daniel Jones
Multiple NFL insiders have shared updates on what the Colts’ choice to tag Daniel Jones means for top free agent WR Alec Pierce.
The Indianapolis Colts made a bold and risky move on Tuesday by placing the transition tag on quarterback Daniel Jones.
This gives the team the chance to match any offer he may receive on the open market after his one year with the Colts, which ended with a torn right Achilles tendon. With the team making that decision, all eyes now go to wide receiver Alec Pierce, who will have the chance to become an unrestricted free agent on Monday if he so chooses.
The Colts remain confident that they can get a deal done with Pierce before the NFL’s legal tampering period begins on Monday, and league insiders have begun sharing updates on the situation.
Colts and Alec Pierce both hope to get an extension done ahead of free agency
Jordan Schultz reported shortly after the Jones news broke that the Colts and Pierce are still negotiating, and both sides are hoping to reach a deal ahead of Monday. Hearing that Pierce’s team is still motivated to get a deal done to keep him from hitting the open market is big news. Because if we are being honest, there is likely to be a lot more money on the table for him if he allows a bidding war to commence in free agency.
Schultz isn’t the only insider to chime in today about Pierce and the Colts. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reminded everyone that Pierce may have extra motivation to return to the state of Indiana, as his brother Caden is transferring to Purdue to play basketball next season. She also shared that she has heard that the Colts are now focusing on extending Pierce ahead of Monday to keep him from hitting free agency and that Pierce’s representation and the team are continuing their negotiations.
It feels like there is a deadline now between the Colts and Pierce. Either the team is able to get a deal across the finish line and keep their emerging number one WR, or Monday arrives, and he is able to talk to other teams, and the price will skyrocket, likely out of the Colts’ hands.
I don’t think the Colts use the transition tag on Jones unless they’re extremely confident they can get an extension done with Pierce. Is that confidence justified, though? That is the question we will all be sitting on the edge of our seats waiting to know the answer to.
