Former Colts player just told the world who he thinks is responsible for Andrew Luck’s shocking retirement from the NFL
Andrew Luck’s former teammate, tight end Eric Ebron, just told a story never heard before explaining who he believes is to blame for the superstar quarterback’s shocking retirement back in 2019.
Andrew Luck’s decision to retire from football in 2019 is one of the most shocking moments in the Indianapolis Colts’ and the NFL’s history.
After being drafted first overall in 2012, he went on to play in only six seasons and 86 total games. Due to multiple injuries sustained throughout his career, he lost his love for the game and his will to keep fighting through them.
One of Luck’s former teammates, tight end Eric Ebron, had quite the story to tell about his quarterback. This includes a person he personally blames for Luck deciding to hang up his cleats now, nearly seven years later.

Former Colts TE Eric Ebron shared that GM Chris Ballard is to blame for Andrew Luck’s early retirement
He (Chris Ballard) tells Andrew, ‘You’re either playing this year or we’re moving on.’ Who the (explicit) would tell Andrew Luck that?
Andrew Luck now says, ‘I’m not gonna be ready. I’m tired of playing with pain. I retire.’ We all find that out. What? Week three and we playing the Chicago Bears. Mid game, bro. Mid (explicit) game”
Eric Ebron
Former Colts TE
Ebron had an eight-year NFL career, with his most recent season in 2021. He retired in 2024 and has since moved into the podcast game with his show “On My Soul.”
He recently had former Colts All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard on his show, during which they discussed Leonard’s abrupt departure from the team. Another topic covered, though, was the even more abrupt retirement of Luck, and Ebron certainly had some thoughts on how that happened.
Ebron says that general manager Chris Ballard gave Luck an ultimatum to either play or the team would move on from the superstar quarterback. He then shares that Luck’s response to said ultimatum was to walk away from the game altogether.
If this is true, Ballard would be responsible for the very thing that has arguably bought him so much time as the franchise’s general manager. Now, it is important to note that Ebron has made it clear in the past that he does not like Ballard, and his time with the Colts did not end well.
So those feelings could be playing a factor in how he feels about Luck’s situation. In fact, Colts beat writer for ESPN Stephen Holder has already shared that, based on what he knows about Luck’s retirement, he believes this story is false.
