It was no secret that the Indianapolis Colts needed a quarterback through the 2023 NFL Draft in the worst way. Ownership was aware of it. The front office knew it. Shane Steichen and staff felt it.
Even the roster had to know the circumstances. Especially with the Colts lacking any stability at the position after Andrew Luck retired just before the 2019 NFL season kicked off. The Colts needed hope where there wasn't much of it.
Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart was among those that knew the team needed to get better behind center. Stewart has been on the roster since 2017, so he has been well-aware of the situation. Fortunately, he got what he wanted in the NFL Draft.
Stewart claims that the Indianapolis Colts drafted exactly who he wanted with the team's first-round draft selection. Anthony Richardson was the choice at No. 4 overall, as the Colts picked the Florida signal caller over Will Levis.
The Colts' veteran defender is from Georgia and played his collegiate football in the Peach State. Therefore, it's not a stretch to say that the defensive tackle was familiar with Richardson's game while he was playing for the Gators.
"He's the guy I wanted all along," Stewart told the media this week. "That guy can throw and he's big, so it's hard to get him down."
Richardson is unlike any other quarterback on the Colts' roster. Or in the league, for that matter. The former Gators signal caller scored a perfect 10 in the Relative Athletic Score and has an elite athletic profile.
Stewart knows that Richardson is stepping in a situation where he'll have to demand the locker room at just 20-years old. The defensive tackle knows that the team will be behind their newest QB.
“You come in and have a big role to fill. It builds character and we’ll see what type of guy he is," Stewart said. "He seems like a great guy. We’ll be behind him and he’ll be behind us.”
The Indianapolis Colts not only landed its quarterback and filled a significant void on the roster. But they also gave one of their best defenders exactly what he wanted through the draft.
