Colts named most ideal landing spot for Anthony Richardson
It might be too difficult for the Colts to pass up on the intriguing talent.
The Indianapolis Colts had an up-close view of their future franchise quarterback this week during the NFL Scouting Combine. Or, at least that is the thought.
With the Colts on the hunt for their next signal caller, the likes of Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Will Levis, and Anthony Richardson were all in Lucas Oil Stadium the last several days. The latter three all threw and participated in drills, while Young will wait to workout until his pro day at Alabama later this month.
Therefore, Shane Steichen and Chris Ballard were able to learn much more about the top quarterback prospects in the class. Through interviews or by watching them throw and workout. It is no secret which passer really stole the show, though.
That would be Anthony Richardson out of Florida.
Richardson entered combine week with a ton of first-round hype. After his trip up to Indianapolis, it is safe to say that the former Gators passer is all but a lock to be selected inside the top-10 next month. If not even higher.
He showcased his big arm, clocked a 4.44 second 40-yard dash, and even leaped 40.5 inches in the vertical jump. At 6-4 and 244 pounds, that is mind-boggling athleticism. Especially for a quarterback.
It is easy to see why teams would covet Richardson. That kind of raw ability, combined with the special tape that he had in big moments, points to a ton of upside on the football field. That is even more true if Richardson is around a quality quarterback developer.
To this point, that is what new Colts head coach Shane Steichen has proven to be. You don't have to look much further than his work with Jalen Hurts, who just turned in a career-best season en route to finishing as the runner-up in MVP voting.
In fact, Pro Football Focus draft analyst Mike Renner believes that the Colts are the ideal situation for Anthony Richardson. Additionally, Renner sees the best fits for Young and Levis being within the AFC South, too.
It would be a lot of fun to see how a pairing of Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor could give defenses fits. After all, Steichen was a part of an Eagles offense that was lethal in the running game — thanks in part to the threat of the QB.
There is a lot to like about Anthony Richardson. He is a prospect that the Indianapolis Colts will undoubtedly do a ton of homework on for the remainder of the draft process.
