The Indianapolis Colts’ QB situation is as bleak as it gets in the NFL right now. They lost starter Daniel Jones to a torn right Achilles tendon during their loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. This led the team to attempt a drastic hail mary to save their season by signing 44-year-old Philip Rivers out of retirement

The reason they felt the need to do this was that, on top of losing Jones, their backup, Anthony Richardson Sr., was already on the IR with an eye injury. Up to this point, there had been considerable mystery surrounding his status going forward, but the Colts finally shared an update, and it was quite positive for the young QB.

Colts are opening Anthony Richardson’s practice window

Richardson has been on the IR since Week 7 after his bizarre pre-game injury ahead of the team’s win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. He is finally returning to practice, as he was able to do at least individual work on Thursday. Head coach Shane Steichen has already confirmed that Richardson won’t be activated off the IR this week against the San Francisco 49ers.

The team’s 2023 first-round pick not being available to slide into the lineup following Jones’ injury made an already unfortunate situation worse. This could have been a giant opportunity for Richardson to prove a lot of doubters wrong and potentially save the Colts’ season. Instead, he’s had to watch on the sideline like he’s done so much already through his first three years in the NFL. Now, Rivers steps into the spot after a five-year hiatus.

Richardson spoke with the media ahead of practice, and his eagerness to return to the field was evident. Steichen shared that there are still some vision impairments that need to improve before he can potentially play again, but the fact that doctors have medically cleared him is a good sign that it’s coming sooner rather than later.
