There was no question about which position that the Indianapolis Colts would draft in the first-round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Quarterback was always the answer; rather, the mystery surrounded which quarterback.
When Bryce Young and CJ Stroud went No. 1 and No. 2 overall, respectively, the board was narrowed down for the Colts. The two realistic options at No. 4 for Indianapolis to address the glaring need were Anthony Richardson and Will Levis.
Indianapolis sided with Richardson, despite weeks of rumor mill suggesting that the Colts had their eyes on Levis. However, Colts owner Jim Irsay revealed that there was a scenario where Levis would have actually been the selection.
Irsay spoke to the media on Saturday about the NFL Draft. As expected, several of the topics that were addressed centered around Anthony Richardson. Irsay claimed that he long had a feeling that Richardson would be the selection.
"I always kinda felt like (Anthony) Richardson was gonna be the guy," Irsay said in his presser. "Even early in the process, even back in February."
There's a lot to like about Richardson, so it's easy to believe that. The newest Colts' signal caller is a rare athlete behind center that seems to be an ideal fit for what head coach Shane Steichen wants to do offensively.
With that said, Irsay acknowledged that the Colts considered other plans, in case of backup. In the scenario that Richardson was not there and the Colts were wiped out, Will Levis very well could have been the selection.
That's not really a surprise. Levis was widely projected to be a first-round draft pick entering the weekend. He was considered the fourth-best quarterback in the class by many, that's where he ended up being taken.
Though unlike Richardson who went in the top-five, Levis had to wait until the second-round to hear his name called. Irsay's comments puts into perspective just how much every pick can be impacted based on how the board falls.
Indianapolis is excited about the potential of Anthony Richardson running the show for the Colts. Levis eventually being drafted to the Tennessee Titans potentially sets the stage for a divisional rivalry for the foreseeable future.
