The Colts knew it was coming, but that doesn’t make this news any less devastating to their 2025 season and beyond.

It’s official: the news the Indianapolis Colts have been dreading, but expecting, is here. ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that quarterback Daniel Jones, in fact, did tear his Achilles. He will now miss the rest of this season, which feels truly devastating for the Colts and Jones himself.

Next for Jones will be a surgery to repair his Achilles, and for the Colts, they still have four more games remaining this season. Now, they must shift their focus to the Seattle Seahawks, the team they are traveling to take on in Week 15. A game they will have to play without their starting QB, as well as their second string, with Anthony Richardson on the IR. The ball is now in the team’s 2025 sixth-round pick, Riley Leonard’s hands.

Daniel Jones’ season comes to an end with an Achilles tear

Dec 7, 2025; Jacksonville, Florida, USA; Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones (17) is tended to by trainers after going down with an apparent injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the first half at EverBank Stadium.

There were a variety of reactions to the news of the Colts naming Daniel Jones as their opening-day starter before the season. The fan base was angry, sad, and confused, which could have led to a disastrous start to the year if Jones allowed those doubts to creep into his own mind. Instead, the veteran quarterback has led the Colts to an incredible start to the year, and the offense is playing at a historically fast pace through the first eight weeks of the season.

Jones finishes the season with 3101 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions, 164 rushing yards, and five rushing touchdowns. He was far from perfect, but he operated Shane Steichen’s offense at a very effective rate. He showed the fan base and the NFL exactly why the Colts made the controversial decision to sign Jones in free agency and name him the starter over Anthony Richardson.

He has a long road ahead to recover from this Achilles tear fully. Unfortunately, he is set to become a free agent, and I’m sure this injury will impact what was going to be a massive extension for the QB. The Colts will have to weigh their options and decide if it is worth still extending Jones ahead of 2026. Only time will tell what the Colts decide to do, but for now, they have no choice but to go out there and try to win games down the stretch with Leonard at center.
