Opposing teams are going to continue to expose a big weakness on the Colts’ roster unless they do something to fix it
The Colts need to make a change or teams will continue to take advantage of this clear weakness on their roster
The Indianapolis Colts suffered their first loss of the year in Week 4 vs. one of the top teams in the NFC, the Los Angeles Rams. Their own mistakes cost them the win, but there is a clear issue on their roster that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. The fact that teams are targeting starting CB Xavien Howard at an unreal rate to start the season is killing the Colts.
The Colts officially have an Xavien Howard problem, and they need to fix it ASAP

The Colts took a risk by signing veteran Xavien Howard this offseason, who missed the entire 2024 season due to an injury. Through the first four weeks, opposing teams have treated him like a bright red target, often leading to big plays. This is becoming a serious problem for the Colts’ secondary, and as long as he remains a starter, teams will continue to exploit the veteran.
The Colts need to find an alternative outside cornerback, and they need to do so quickly, whether that involves turning to someone else on their roster, like Mehki Blackmon or rookie Jonathan Edwards, or making a move for an upgrade.
If they opt for the free agency route, a name they should consider is former Colts cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore’s experience would be a valuable addition, and his film from last year with the Minnesota Vikings would be a solid upgrade to what Howard has been for the Colts.
Another option the Colts could consider is making a trade for a CB. Two names come to mind as options to consider: the first is Cleveland Browns CB Greg Newsome, a solid starter who is in the final year of his rookie contract. Another is Seattle Seahawks CB Riq Woolen, who is available via trade, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Woolen had a strong start to his career, but he has fallen out of the rotation in Seattle. He is long and fast, but needs a change of scenery.
