It is no secret that the Indianapolis Colts have to get their first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft right. Indianapolis can ill-afford on missing out on their quarterback of the future yet again.
One obstacle in the way is that the Colts won't get the first choice at QB. Sitting at No. 4 overall, Indianapolis has to hope that the draft falls in a favorable way that allows them to select a signal caller that they are confident in.
The fact of the matter is that the Colts have no control over how the draft will play out. That, combined with the desperate need at QB, has one NFL writer tabbing the Colts as the team under the most pressure in the draft.
NFL.com columnist Adam Schein published a column that looked at the biggest questions entering the 2023 NFL Draft. In the article, he explained that the Colts face the most pressure.
Schein states that general manager Chris Ballard has failed to build the Colts into a consistent contender. And that Ballard must maximize the nine selections that Indianapolis holds next week.
It's the Colts, on the heels of last year's debacle of a season. Chris Ballard has never won the AFC South. Think about that: He's been Indianapolis' general manager since 2017, and this hasn't exactly been a glorious stretch for the division. The Colts own nine picks in this draft, and Ballard needs to maximize his returns.
It's simply the need behind center that has the Colts in a difficult position. Schein even suggests that perhaps Indianapolis should have been the team to trade up to No. 1 in order to secure the best passer in the class.
Nonetheless, Indianapolis has to come away with a quarterback that they can build their future around. Staying put at No. 4 and hoping the draft falls to them is a risky move for the Colts to take.
Truthfully, I was stunned Indy wasn't the team to trade up for the No. 1 pick to secure Bryce Young's services. The Colts, currently set to pick at No. 4, cannot sit back and wait. If C.J. Stroud is their answer at quarterback, and Young is indeed the first player off the board, Ballard and Co. must move up to No. 2 to get their guy. Or … pay Lamar Jackson and make a trade with Baltimore. One way or another, Indy needs a legit answer at the game's most important position. It's only everything.
Given the need at the most important position in the sport, it's difficult to argue against the Indianapolis Colts being the team under the most pressure in the draft. Indianapolis has had a revolving door at quarterback since Andrew Luck retired, and there is no clear answer yet on the roster.
The Colts must land their franchise quarterback in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. There is no other way to put it. No ifs, ands, or buts. All eyes will be on Chris Ballard when the team makes their selection.
