The Colts are considering every option to replace Daniel Jones after his season ending injury, that even includes NFL legend Philip Rivers.

The Indianapolis Colts are at quite a crossroads right now. After starting 7-1, they have lost four of their last five games and now sit at 8-5. To make things worse, they just lost starting QB Daniel Jones to a season-ending torn right Achilles injury.

The team is desperate to get the season back on track and secure a playoff spot. It seems it’s willing to leave no stone unturned and try anything possible to do just that, even if that means signing a potential future Hall of Famer, who hasn’t played in five years. The team is flying out former Colts and Los Angeles Chargers legend Philip Rivers for a workout on Tuesday.

If the Colts and Rivers decide to put pen to paper, this would be a reunion in multiple ways. Rivers was the Colts’ starting quarterback in 2020 and was the last QB to lead the team to the playoffs. That was Michael Pittman Jr. and Johnathan Taylor’s rookie seasons. He would also be reuniting with left guard Quenton Nelson, who was on the roster during that time.

Another notable reunion would be between Rivers and head coach Shane Steichen. Steichen was with the Chargers from 2011 to 2019, alongside Rivers. He worked directly with him as his QB coach from 2016 to 2019, and the two have stayed close over the years. Before any of those reunions can come to fruition, though, the Colts and Rivers have to decide to follow through with a deal.

There are multiple things to consider, one of which is whether Rivers is in playing shape. He turned 44 on Monday and hasn’t played in an NFL game in over five years. Rivers was also named a semi-finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year, and agreeing to return to the NFL would mean his wait for Canton would also reset.

This partnership seems far from a lock at this point, but it’s hard not to root for it to work out. The Colts locker room looked utterly defeated following their loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the news of Jones’ injury. Maybe signing Uncle Phil would give the team a needed boost as they continue to fight for a playoff spot.
