The Indianapolis Colts have been very pleased with rookie head coach Shane Steichen. But not every team feels the same way about the person hired to run their respective football teams.
The first head coach was fired of the 2023 season, and it brings up a memory that, at the time, seemed devasting for the Colts but since has aged like fine wine.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard spent his first season tied to head coach Chuck Pagano, who was with the team prior to Ballard being hired. After a disappointing season, Pagano would be fired, and Ballard now would hire his first head coach as a general manager. After completing the search, he and the team decided to offer the job to New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
McDaniels would initially accept the job, leading the team to announce the hire over social media. He would go on to spurn the Colts and stay with the Patriots, which would send the Colts back to the drawing board to select their next head coach. They would go on to hire Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich.
McDaniels would go on to take a head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders before the 2022 season. He has now been fired before completing his 2nd season with the Raiders, making it the 2nd time he was fired as a NFL head coach before completing his 2nd season. Making him the first person ever to suffer such a fate.
His inability to keep a job is troublesome and a reason the Colts can feel relieved that he spurned them. But more importantly, the toxic environments that have occurred under his leadership with the Broncos in 2010 and now the Raiders in 2023 is something no franchise wants any part of.
