The Indianapolis Colts seemingly came away winners in the 2023 NFL Draft. Indianapolis landed its franchise quarterback in Anthony Richardson and other potential instant-impact rookies, too.
There is a lot to be excited about regarding the Colts. General manager Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen are gearing up for a strong opening season of the Steichen era in the fall.
Indianapolis carried the momentum from the draft over to the undrafted free agent market. Shortly after the draft concluded, the Colts went to work and added one of the marquee players available: Alabama lineman Emil Ekiyor, Jr.
That addition has the chance to pay off in a big way for the Colts. Because the interior of the offensive line is one of the biggest weaknesses on the roster. Indianapolis desperately needs more talent and depth at guard.
Ekiyor started at right guard for threes seasons at Alabama. He played in big moments against elite competition while in the SEC West. The hope for Indianapolis is that carries to the NFL.
NFL expert Nick Baumgardner went as far to say that Ekiyor might be his favorite UDFA signing of the year in his column for The Athletic. Baumgardner was surprised that Ekiyor was not selected, and the Colts made sure to take advantage.
Ekiyor might be my favorite UDFA signing this year. Even knowing the inconsistencies of Alabama’s offensive line in 2022, I was surprised Ekiyor wasn’t picked. A long, well-built guard who can play center, he had frustrating moments on film (he wasn’t alone), but he has the talent to start in the NFL.
It's not always likely for an undrafted player to make a roster, much less compete for a meaningful role. Especially as a rookie. But that seems to be the case with Ekiyor, as he arrives to the Colts with a good amount of hype.
Time will ultimately tell just how big of a steal that the Indianapolis Colts got by signing the Alabama product. However, the early indications point to Emil Ekiyor providing value.
